Abby Carries the Flame of Hope

On any given day, you’re likely to find Kaiser Permanente member and Special Olympics athlete Abby Reznek in a swimming pool practicing her freestyle stroke. But on May 26, she could have been mistaken for a runner. Abby was part of a select group of people who carried the Special Olympics torch, known as the Flame of Hope, while it passed through Maryland during the Unified Relay Across America.

The Flame of Hope was lit in Athens, Greece on May 14 at a formal torch lighting ceremony and arrived in Washington, DC on May 26. From there, it began its 6,890-mile cross-country journey, with scheduled stops in communities in all 50 states and all Kaiser Permanente regions along the way. The relay will culminate at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games Opening Ceremony in Los Angeles, Calif. on July 25.
