NBA and Kaiser Permanente Team Up for NBA FIT Clinic for Special Olympics Athletes

The sounds of sneakers screeching, basketballs pounding freshly polished hardwood, and the sharp slap of high-fives echoing throughout the gymnasium paled in comparison to the joyous laughter from the Special Olympics athletes in attendance.

Last Wednesday, the National Basketball Association, Kaiser Permanente, and Special Olympics Colorado held a FIT Clinic for more than 40 Special Olympics athletes inside the spacious Gold Crown Fieldhouse in Lakewood, Colo.

This clinic, hosted by NBA Legend Dan Issel, was designed to help the athletes sharpen their basketball skills while learning important lessons about nutrition, exercise, and playing together. Kaiser Permanente also provided a health station where the Special Olympics athletes learned about nutrition, participated in trivia in the form of exercises, and won prizes.

"There wasn't a single frown at the NBA FIT Clinic—it was awesome! It's proof that exercise can be fun—it fuels your body and uplifts your spirit," said Jandel Allen-Davis, MD, vice president of government, external relations, and research, Kaiser Permanente Colorado. "We're honored to partner with the NBA and to collaborate with the Special Olympics on this wonderful event."

As the NBA's first-ever health care partner, Kaiser Permanente serves as the health care expert and strategic consultant for the league on health and wellness programming, including the NBA FIT program. Through this partnership, Kaiser Permanente and the NBA have jointly held several FIT Clinics in communities across the country.

In addition, Kaiser Permanente is a Founding Champion and the Official Health Partner of the 2015 World Games on July 25. More than 700 Kaiser Permanente physicians will provide medical care to the 6,500 athletes participating in the World Games. Find out more about the Special Olympics World Games at LA2015.org.
